I met him once, years ago, 2005 to be precise; and I asked him, “what’s up with you?!???!” And he asked me, “Why do minorities always ask me that, why can’t a white guy just be an anti-racist?”
I was thinking, because it just seems odd for a white man who reaps so many benefits from white privilege, to speak out against it. He never really answered my question. But then I discovered what was up with him, when I read his autobiography White Like Me, deep relationships in an African-American community in his formative years. That’s what made the difference, I think.
