I taught literature at a community college from 2000 until 2015. During that time I found that people’s attention spans were rapidly decreasing and not only did I find teaching literature becoming more difficult, I actually struggled with reading it myself! And I realized how tragic that this was, that the environment I lived in was making it much more difficult for me to engage in an activity that is so rich and mentally stimulating. I was participating in my own dumbing down. This is why I do so appreciate Electric Literature! I will read the essays, stories and interviews and this allows me to feel like I’m not such an American Idiot. Literature teaches so many things at once. While some of my students would complain that literature taught them nothing…I would tell them, to the contrary, it teaches you everything! (Except math, but it can even teach that if you read the right novel, poem or short story.)
