If it gets out, of someone slips up an emails a spreadsheet with everyone’s salaries on it (it has happened) absolute chaos ensues…because what you stated is usually the case, and there is almost always some outrageous inequality at issue on the spreadsheet.
Companies guard salary info like trade secrets…because they know what they are doing; and they know how exploitive it is, and of course they don’t care, and they definitely don’t want to get caught, because getting caught causes chaos.
