Thinker Thursdays — Who Are You?
Happy Thursday Readers and Writers! It’s Amli, your everyday Lightworker. As a part of my light work, I would like to invite join our Life-in-10 Minutes Community.
Life in 10 is an actual (and now virtual) space where readers, writers, thinkers and be-ers from all over the world commune to manage…wait for it… life!
And not easy life…not the oh look at my brand-new pair of shoes life, but the Oh my God, I am about to lose my house life, or I’m really trying to beat this heroin addiction life, or white supremacy is just beating me the fuck down, life.
WE DO REAL LIFE.
And we do it in 10 minutes!
Please! Check out our site! Submit your Life in 10 here. And each day of the week, in our Facebook group, different Life in 10 teachers will be throwing out different writing ideas and prompts and posts.
Hope Whitby, for example, posts the most awesome poetry, almost daily! Read it! A good morning poem is like a good cup of coffee!
Today, after having been on Holiday Hiatus (yeah that’s a thing, cause I made it a thing, for me. I had to or I was gonna lose my mind), I’m back for Thinker Thursdays.
What are we thinking about today?
Who are you? Woo, Hoo! Woo Hoo!
I really want to know!
Seriously, have you ever stopped to think about how many parts to yourself there are? Trust, I know, that I have at least (at least!) seven different personalities living up in me. It would be really cool if they could all get to together and hang out with each other, like all the different Alanises in the Ironic video. (Love that video! Check it out below!)
It’s not so important that I know all of you, or that anyone else know all of you. But it is really important that you, know you. Shakespeare said:
‘This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.’
Ironically enough, the identity (self) of Shakespeare has been called into question. Was he this amazing brilliant and prolific a writer, really? Or more like a producer, who collected a brilliant team of writers, stole their work, and passed it off as his own?
Did Shakespeare know himself? Was he honest with himself? What could be more false though, than stealing someone else’s work and putting your name on it? Did he even see it that way? Or did he believe he wrote all of those plays by himself? Was his thief of other’s work a part of his shadow self. As Carl Jung explains it, the shadow self is that fucked-up part of ourself that we generally do not want to deal with, and the less we deal with it, the more toxic and dangerous it becomes.
Unfortunately, there can be no doubt that man is, on the whole, less good than he imagines himself or wants to be. Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is. — Carl Jung
Don’t want to be a toxic mess? Don’t want to be, “transformed into a maniac or a savage beast, always inclined to lay the blame on external circumstances?”
Don’t want to “constantly live on the edge of a volcano?” Avoiding an “outburst that will destroy everybody within reach?”
Carl Jung, the big grandaddy of psychology, (forever fighting with Freud for that title, ) insists that we must get acquainted with our darker, shadow selves, to even have a shot at self- actualization.
The shadow is a moral problem that challenges the whole ego-personality, for no one can become conscious of the shadow without considerable moral effort. To become conscious of it involves recognizing the dark aspects of the personality as present and real. This act is the essential condition for any kind of self-knowledge. — Carl Jung
So, who are you? Do you really want to know? Of course, you’re fine with whatever you have brought to light, your best self, for everyone and all to see. But do you dare to recognize, your darkness? Can you play with all the pieces of you? Here’s a DC go-go tune about it, to assist in your exploration.
What pieces of yourself do you acknowledge? (Or more interestingly, which ones don’t you?)
Write about them! (All of them!) You have ten minutes!
