Wow. I did not know pedaphelia was an out in the open sort of thing in the 70s. But the fact is, this has been a problem for quite some time, and your teacher knew exactly what he was doing. It is shameful that he was able to get away with it. Clearly the administration knew something was up if the nickname of “queer bait” was given to whomever he showed interest in.
There are just so many facets to this abuse and the vulnerable get targeted. Everything that you just described are huge red flags, but unfortunately schools and administrators have been avoiding doing anything substantive about any of this for years. There are problems with proof, because these predators are smart. They target the vulnerable, those who don’t have the self-confidence to complain and are not likely to be believed even if they do. I hope that all of this is changing, the more we learn about the nature of sexual assault.
Well count yourself lucky you didn’t fall into that trap. There are plenty that do and the impact is just devastating.
This is a human problem, and while feminists have been on the leading edge of recognizing the problem and responding effectively — it is going to take everyone getting involved and speaking up to adequately address these issues. The more we talk about this stuff, get all our experiences out in the open, the more that is known about the problem and the more effectively we can all respond. Thank you for sharing your personal experiences. You have no idea how many people you are potentially helping by by doing that.
